Saving Electricity in Data Centres and Elsewhere

December 23rd, 2011 by admin No comments »

Electricity is a highly refined form of energy. This is why it should be reserved for powering electronics, IT, and LED lamps for low-energy lighting.

Heating and cooling jobs should definitely be used to different sources: direct solar power like CSP (concentrating solar power) or solar thermal (solar hot water) come to mind. Cutting down on electricity consumption just for heating and cooling alone saves an energy amount equal to six nuclear power stations nationally. This is not a “massaging” of the numbers but direct heat is overall more efficient for those less-refined applications.

Green IT Moving to Primetime

March 6th, 2011 by admin No comments »

Meanwhile and after we spent more than a year in this particular field as a non-profit, the mainstream press starts catching up: “Green IT is one of the biggest markets out there these days. Companies like Sentilla, SynapSense, and Power Assure have created tools for optimizing energy consumption. SeaMicro and Calxeda are touting, respectively, energy efficient servers and chips. Alphabet Energy has waste heat converter … Google will introduce a DC system for some of their servers … “, Oracle-Sun are also switching to DC which makes the use of Renewables in an island grid setting a lot easier.

While this is a very good thing, we still have a long way to go cutting website-related carbon emissions and trimming the overall patterns of how we use energy in general!

Carbon-Free Website Approval Programme

January 2nd, 2010 by admin No comments »

If your website is truly carbon-free, i e powered by Renewables and not just “offset” by buying into some certificate program after polluting using coal or nuclear energy, then you might be interested in obtaining the Carbon-Free certificate. Once obtained, websites are entitled to show the Carbon-Free banner to let web visitors know that this site is making a difference now.

Both members and non-members are eligible to participate in the Approval programme. The auditing process is straightforward, and a Seal of Approval will be issued to all participating websites upon passing this process.

Carbon-Free Website

January 2nd, 2010 by admin No comments »

The rapid growth of the internet has created significant additional demand for power and, hence, additional CO2 emmissions. Carbon-Free Website is a non-profit organisation addressing this problem, promoting ideas for websites to not only be “carbon-neutral” (e g buy “allowances” to offset carbon footprint) but become truly carbon-free in a more direct sense, and providing solutions for getting there.
